"The Worst Artist In America"
"I want to make art so awful no one will hang it."
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997)
With out the option of art at his high school, Roy Lichtenstein began drawing and painting his junior year on his own. In 1956 he began his pop art with a painting of a dollar bill. After challenge from his son in 1961 to draw better than a picture in a comic book, roy began using his signature Ben-Day dots, lettering, and speech balloons. With this new style Roy became a huge success.
During the 40's and 50's, advertisements, billboards, and cartoons were apart of American life; not fit subject matter for artists. So when Lichtenstein's comic book paintings appeared in galleries, the critics were furious. By transforming objects from everyday life, Lichtenstein and other pop artists were able to revitalize modern art. The helped us to see the world around us with fresh eyes.
