"The Rest of the Story"

Raphael Sanzio, 1483-1520, Sistene Madonna, 1513. Oil on canvas, 8'8" x 6'5"
You may recognize the small angels at the bottom of the painting. They are seen on calendars, posters, and many popular objects. It is awesome to view the entire painting in which they are originally painted only as a part. The impish looks on their faces seem to almost mock the serious subject above. The Madonna holds the Christ child in the middle Saint Sixtus II kneels to the right. The picture was probably intended to commemorate the death of Pope Julius II in 1513.

This painting represents the pinnacle of Raphael's achievement. He served as the first inspector general of antiquities and Court painter until his early death. Raphael is considered the ultimate painter of the High Renaissance. Leonardo and Michelangelo were accessible to few private patrons and seldom delivered finished works. Raphael met his deadlines with ease and grace. He was 22 when he arrived to paint in the Vatican in Rome and even though he died at age 37, he still produced many major works of Art.
