Jasper Johns - American abstract
expressionist/pop painter & sculptor
Born 1930

A man who knew at the age of five that he wanted to be an artist and whose work is rooted in the "changing focus of the eye" and profound concepts of simplicity. His images, common objects in American culture included flags, targets, numbers, maps, light bulbs, and cans, all presents in unexpected ways. He preferred flat art to emphasize texture and to establish the relationship between the real object and his art. The meaning in his art was conveyed through the "way it looks", using powerful brushstrokes to apply large quantities of paint.

In 1958 "Three Flags", depicted here, represented one of the many flag portraits he would paint, with the first in the series inspired by a dream. He reworked the flags many times, which suggests a deeply rooted personal interest. He loved to make art just because he thought "it would be interesting to do that". He was philosophical in his use of different techniques and media in new and original combinations. His methods included: rubbing finger-painting and tracing.....all of which begin in the school or nursery.
