A man who recognized the true significance of his Wild West era. capitalized on it through his paintings, and left a lasting contribution to society. his boyhood fostered a love of horses. he attended the Yale School of Art and the Art Students League of New York before heeding the call to "go West". As a young man he traveled widely, sketching the people and places of the new frontier. In 1886 he established himself as an art illustrator selling work to such famous publications as Harper's Weekly. He was a war correspondent in Cuba during the Civil War.

His work included 22 bronze sculptures; illustrations, more than three thousand drawings and paintings, a novel, a Broadway play and over one hundred articles and stories. This painting is a self-portrait of Remington on a horse. However, his real interest lies in the horse, as was often true of his work.
