Jackson Pollock, 1912-56
American painter, the commanding figure of the Abstract Expressionist movement.
"On the floor I am more at ease, I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around in it, work from the four sides and be literally 'in' the painting."
Pollock studied under Thomas Hart Benton, a regionalist painter. he was also influenced by Mexican muralists painters (Orozco, Rivera, Sizueiros) and aspects of surrealism. From 1938-42 he worked for the Federal Art Project in the easel division. In 1947 his drip and splash style emerged. He affixed his canvas to the floor or the wall and dripped and poured his paint from cans. He used broken glass in the mixture. his manner of work became known as "action painting" which reflects the unconscious moods of the artist. The "All-over" style of painting is attributed to him and is defined by a lack of emphasis or definable parts.
pollock was an alcoholic and was very unhappy in his personal life. He spent many hours in therapy. He died a premature death in a car crash.
This painting was executed at Eastland High School as a demonstration for the art class by artist Justin Joyner of Perryton, Texas. Justin is an art major at the Pittsburg Institute of Art.
