Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci 1452-1519

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance, yet he left only a handful of completed paintings. He had a keen eye and quick mind that led to many scientific discoveries, yet he never published his journals. He usually used "mirror writing" starting at the right side of the page and moving to the left. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, engineer, inventor, and scientist.

In 1516 Da Vinci left Rome to become the "First Painter, architect and mechanic of the King" for King Francis I. The Mona Lisa is his most famous painting. He carried it with him at all times. It later became the possession of the king and it is unknown whether it was ever sold. Some believe it was sold to the King for $105,000. and others say it was with Leonardo upon his death. It was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 and returned two years later. the painting is 21 x 30 inches, smaller than most envision.
