James Abbot McNeill Whistler
American painter/etcher (1834-1903)

James Abbott McNeill Whistler would prove to be the most important American Artist to that time and would have a profound impact on the course of European and modern art.

He was the first to declare Art for Art Sake, and to make that point, he would refuse to give conventional titles to his paintings calling them "Arrangement in Grey and Black", "A little note in Yellow etc. He wanted to force the public to view his paintings for the art of canvas and paint instead of what it may have represented in life This painting demonstrates his characteristic style and reveals his European influences as he lifed most of his life in Europe. The painting techniques he used in his work were similar in style to the paintings of other French impressionist painters such as Degas and Monet.
