(1853-1890)
Vincent van Gogh is probably one of the best-known post-impressionists painters of his time. An artist only the last 10 years of his life, he produced over 2,000 works of art in various media, yet he only managed to sell one; which in today's currency would be about $80. He had spells of madness and spent a year in an asylum, but when he was clear minded he continued to paint. Starry Night was painted at that time and is probably his most noted work. The twisting marks of Impasto and his use of bold, jarring colors and vivid patterns gave his work energy, emotion, and rhythm. Regrettably, he is also known for cutting his left ear off and giving it to a woman.
