USMC War Memorial
The USMC War Memorial (often called the Iwo Jima memorial), a statue depicting the raising of the flag on during the Battle of Iwo Jima, is on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. It is dedicated to the lives of United States Marines given in service to their country since 1775. The statue, sculpted by Felix de Weldon, was cast in bronze in Brooklyn, New York, and shipped by truck to its present site in 108 separate pieces. It is about six times life scale. The sculpture is based on the timeless photograph by Joe Rosenthal, one of the most famous photographs of all time. An American flag flies on the USMC War Memorial 24 hours a day - one of the few sites where this is permitted. The memorial was formally dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on November 10, 1954, the 179th anniversary of the Marine Corps. The final cost of $850,000 was donated, 96% from U.S. Marines.
