Gustav Klimt
(1864-1918)
Gustav Klimt was a Viennese painter and the founder of the Vienna Secession, the Austrian Art Nouveau movement. He was the son of a goldsmith, studying art in Vienna between the ages of 14 and 20. His early work, consisting principally of large murals for theaters was influenced by Byzantine mosaics. He turned to easel painting at the age of 30 and moved into his owned studio. This painting, "The Kiss", is his most celebrated painting. The actual painting glows with real gold paint and is in the Moderne Galerie. It is thought to represent happiness and a wolrd of perfect harmony in which differences - not those of the sexes - are revoked. In 1917 he was appointed honorary professor at the Vienna Academy. If you search the internet for his name you will find over 235,000 sites.
