Georgia O'Keefe was born on a farm and spent her early years studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. She taught art in Texas from 1913 to 1918. O'Keefe's works are well-known for their bold composition, close-up views of subject matter, primarily flowers and still-life compositions, which included sun-bleached bones and skulls. Her subjects were most often set against very simple backgrounds. She married Alfred Stieglitz, 23 years her senior. He was a well-known photographer and owned "291" the famous New York studio who exhibited her work. She loved her home in New Mexico, a remote area called "Ghost Ranch". The large maverick is inspired by her work, you can see her image outlined in the center.
