Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist and stage designer
Picasso is the most renowned artist of the 20th century. He had dyslexia and had trouble learning to read and write. He would bring a pigeon to class and spend his time drawing it. He was the son of a painter and drawing master, mastering academic draughtsmanship when he was still a child. It os conventional to divide his work into certain phases, all such divisions are to some extent arbitrary, as his energy and imagination were such that he was at all times working on a wealth of themes and in a variety of styles.
His "Blue" period of 1901-04, reflects his early days of poverty. Everything he painted - self-portraits, beggars, harlequins, and musicians are shown sad and blue. The "Pink" period, 1905-08, featured circus performers, acrobats and dancers as his favorite subjects. He experienced his first love and was happier and making more money. One of his three mansions in the south of France was bought with the price commanded by one of his still lifes. It is said that he completed 200 works of art the ninetieth year of his life.
As a young artist in Paris his place was robbed, thieves stole everything but his art He was 5'2" tall and could stand in front of a canvas for 7 or 8 hours at a stretch Picasso said "We are all born artists, the problem is remaining one as an adult!"
