Patrick Nagel (1945-1984)
Born in Dayton, Ohio and raised in Los Angeles, California, Patrick Nagel became a freelance artist who received his Bachelor of Arts from California State University at Fullerton. He became a freelance artist who used his own unique style.
The feeling of Nagel's work is suggestive of Japanese wood block prints as well as Art Deco styling, but is completely contemporary in appeal. Starting from an ordinary photograph, he would create a simplified drawing and then interpret the drawing to a painting, always simplifying his work to get more across with fewer elements. Bold, dark lines shape perspective out of flat, cool colors and white spaces. Some people describe the results as "fantasy realism."
