Michelangelo (1475-1564)

During the High Renaissance period, Michelangelo was a well-known Italian sculptor, architect, painter, and poet. His best works were almost all in the service of the Catholic Church and include the sculpture of David and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The Creation of Adam is one of the 400 life-sized figures painted in the chapel from 1508 to 1512. Michealangelo's mother died when he was only 6 and his lonely childhood was thought to be the reason for his fiery temper and difficult character. Michelangelo lived through the reigns of thirteen popes, and works for nine of them. He never married, and once described himself as, "A poop man and of little worth."
