Charles M. Russell
1864-1926
Charles Russell was born to moderate wealth like Frederic Remington. He dreamed of becoming a real cowboy when he moved to Montana at the age of 16. He experienced the ways of the frontier life first-hand with a mountain man who befriended him. In 1882 Charlie worked as a wrangler on a cattle drive. This experience of 11 years became the foundation for his later works. He loved to draw and sketch recording the images as a self-taught artist. The hallmarks of his art reflect an observant eye, a feel for animal and human anatomy, a sense of humor and a flair for portraying action.
He married Nancy Cooper in 1896 and she provided the business sense and drive to make her husband one of America's most popular artists. His dream was to become a movie star and his favorite stars were James Dean and Marilyn Monroe.
