Wayne Thiebaud was born in Mesa, Arizona on November 15, 1920. During high school, Thiebaud enjoyed working in the theatre department on the stage crew, and also enjoyed illustration and cartooning. This lead to Thiebaud being hired at the young age of 16 by Walt Disney Studios' animation department. He later became assistant professor of art at the University of California in Davis where he concentrated on a series of paintings dealing with food and other icons. Thiebaud's first one-man show in New York ended with great success and led to many more shows. Wayne Thiebaud was presented with the National Medal of the Arts in 1994.
