Betsy Ross
Flag Artist - Fashion Designer, 1752-1836

Elizabeth Griscom - also known as Betsy, was the eighth of seventeen children, born to Samuel and Rebecca Griscom, Quakers from Philadelphia. Betsy was an apprentice to a local upholsterer, where she performed all manner of sewing jobs, including flag-making. She fell in love with another apprentice, John Ross, who was an Episcopal. Quakers frowned on inter-denominational marriages, so when she eloped with him in 1773, she was "read out" of the Quaker community. Her entire history was erased within their meeting house. It also caused irrevocable split with her family. In later years she returned to the Quaker traditions.

In May of 1776 Betsy met with the Committee of Three: George Washington, George Ross, and Robert Morris. The meeting resulted in the creation of the first American flag. It is thought that she suggested a 5-point star; rather than a 6-point star recommended by Washington. She claimed to have done tailoring for George Washington.

When we look at an American flag we think of freedom, pride, liberty, and Betsy Ross. It is no surprise that this talented seamstress has become one of the most cherished figures of American History.
