Original Location: Mr. C's Express Photo

Present Location: Missing

Dorothea Lange (1895-1965)

Lange's early work documented the stark reality of The Great Depression. Because of her subject matter, many of her photos were censored by the federal government. She is said to have "Put a face on the depression" by combining the indignities suffered with the courage and dignity of the people.

Later she documented the change on the homefront after the events of Pearl Harbor. President Roosevelt relocated Japanese-Americans into camps in the West and hired Lange to photograph their neighborhoods, processing centers, and camps. The now portable camera opened up a whole new world of candid photography.
