Cone Rice, Jr.
Cone Carroll  Rice, Jr. (Bud or CC to his friends) was born in Tyler, Texas on June 10, 1933 to Cone Carroll Rice and Edna Gallagher Rice.   He graduated from Tyler High School in 1950, and attended the University of Texas.  In 1954, he left his beloved University to join the Navy, where he became a Lieutenant serving as a helicopter pilot.  In 1957, he was stationed at Rehm Field in San Diego, California, where he met his future wife and the mother of his five children, Stephenie Rich.  In 1961, he graduated from the U.S. Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA.
After marriage, and the birth of his first two children, Cone returned to Tyler in 1962, where he owned and operated Cone Rice GMC.  He eventually sold the dealership and partook in other ventures in various fields.  At one point he owned and operated a  dry cleaner, and also received his real estate license and worked in sales for different companies.  In 1986, he was awarded Salesman of the Year for Ortho Chemical Company.   While working for the Spectrum Group, he achieved the top region in Sales, for three years in a row.  Cone was quite the salesman
In March, 1994, Cone went to work for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.  He was the Supply Officer at the Walker Sayle Unit in Breckenridge, TX until May of 2004, when he retired from the state.  The Sayle Unit is a Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, and Cone loved having the opportunity to encourage young men to turn their lives around and embrace sobriety.    His intellectual curiosity led him on a life journey of discovery and a  review of history.  He loved classical music, biographies, and virtually everything non-fiction.  He knew something about everything and always had an interesting anecdote to share on virtually any subject.  He used that same wonderful memory to recall details about everyone he met, delighting the individuals who had shared some detail of their life with him, with his incredible recall and sincere interest in them and their lives.  His wit was quick, and he appreciated the same trait in others, rewarding them with deep and infectious laughter.  He was deeply compassionate, and incredibly thoughtful, once again remembering dates, significant events and passages which had occurred to other people
