Billy Joe Taylor
Billy Joe Taylor, age 85 of Cisco, TX died Sunday September 25, 2011 at the Cisco Homestead and Nursing Rehab. Billy Joe was born May 26, 1926 in Cisco, TX the son of Grover Cleveland Taylor and Sarah Elizabeth (Richardson) Taylor. Billy Joe grew up in the Dan Horn Community and graduated from Scranton High School. He married Louise Rice on July 4, 1947 and she preceded him in death in 1992. He later married Patsy Reynolds January 1, 1994. Billy Joe served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on Midway Island and Pearl Harbor. He served 34 years ( 4 active duty and 30 years in reserves). He retired from the U.S. Postal service after 30 years. He enjoyed farming and ranching. Billy Joe was a member of First Baptist Church in Cisco, where he was a deacon. Survivors include wife, Patsy Reynolds of Cisco; 4 sons; Billy Joe Taylor Jr. (Butch) of Vista, CA, Randy Taylor and wife Ginny of Brownwood, TX, Andy Taylor and wife Betty of Brownwood, TX, Rex Taylor and wife Lucrecia of Olney, TX; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. Billy Joe was preceded in death by 3 brothers, 2 sisters and one grandson Graveside funeral services were held on Tuesday September 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Mitchell Cemetery with Brother Benny Hagan officiating. Visitation was held Tuesday morning September 27, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until noon at Summers-Chambers Funeral Home in Cisco. Peggy Lou Miller
BROWNWOOD- Peggy Lou Miller, 83, of Brownwood, died September 22, 2011, at her home. Graveside services will be Monday, September 26, 2011 in the Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home in Cisco. Peggy Lou was born April 14, 1928, in Cisco, Texas to Carl and Clara Belle (Boshier) Nix. She graduated from Cisco High School and Draughn’s Business College. She was employed as a telephone operator by General Telephone. Peggy Lou and Coy Lee Miller were married October 2, 1945, in Cisco. They would have been married 66 years this year. She was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church. She loved her family. Survivors are her husband, Coy of Brownwood; sons, Coy Wayne Miller and wife, Diane, of Frisco, and Rick Miller and wife, Cari of Brownwood; daughters, Darlene Bunn and husband, Jimmy of Prosper, Kathy Byrd and husband, Mart (deceased) of Mustang, OK, and Jodie Krivanek and husband, Louie of Mustang, OK.
Robert Fox
EASTLAND – Robert (Bob) William Fox, 90, passed away September 22, 2011 in Eastland. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Merriman Cemetery in Ranger with Reverend Ray Rodgers officiating and under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland. Bob was born August 19, 1921 in Henrietta, Texas to William Napoleon and Emma Adaline (Wright) Fox. He attended schools in Union (Lone Cedar) and Alameda Communities. He married Annie Belle Alldredge on April 10, 1943. He was a member of the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII. After returning from the Army he went to work for Hood and Bob King as a mechanic for many years before opening his own shop (Bob’s Garage) east of town. Being an auto mechanic most of his life, he believed Ford was the best car ever made and never drove anything else. His greatest joy was having his family around, working his farm, raising cattle and gardening. His parents, 6 brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Bob is survived by his wife, Annie Belle of Eastland; two sons, David and Robert of Eastland; two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Ronald Hale and Kay and Ruben Zarate of Eastland; three grandchildren, Tava Marrington of Burleson, Kirt Fox and Joey Sattarphai of Eastland; several step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several step great-grandchildren; one sister, Dealva Rodgers of Cisco; one brother, P.E. Fox of Desdemona; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kevin Cunningham, Valley View Nursing Center and Alpha Omega Hospice for the care provided to “PA” during this difficult time.
Virgie Gregg
CISCO- Virgie Gregg, 96, of Fort Worth and formerly of Cisco passed away at a Grapevine hospital on Thursday September 22, 2011. Services were held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in the Kimbrough Funeral Chapel with Rev. Buddy Sipe officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kimbrough Funeral Home. Visitation was Monday evening 5:00~7:00 PM in the Kimbrough Funeral Chapel. Virgie was born to Grover C. and Bessie (Linebarger) Hastings in the Pleasant Hill Community in Eastland County, Texas on November 19, 1914. She was a graduate of Carbon High School and worked as a hairdresser for 56 years. She married Revis Gregg on June 30, 1979; he preceded her in death on October 17, 1993. Virgie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keller, Texas and Order of Eastern Star for 74 years. She is survived by her daughters, Faye Cameron and Joyce Martin both of Fort Worth; granddaughters, Suzanne Surles Alderink of North Richland Hills, Kristi Surles Wolfen of Malakoff; grandson, Craig Marston Surles of Dallas; grandchildren, Brittany Wolfen, Kailey Wolfen, Ryan Alderink, Blake Alderink, Kaitlyn Alderink, Lauren Surles; and great grandson, Bryson Cleveland.
Eunita Trimble
BRECKENRIDGE- Eunita Trimble, age 90 of Breckenridge, died on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 25th, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Jeff Miller and Rev. Charles West officiating. Interment will follow in the Baker Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held Saturday evening, September 24th, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Eunita Irene Pierce was born on August 24, 1921 in Carbon, Texas to parents, Charles Elgin Pierce and Maude Irene Reed Pierce. She began school in Carbon and later moved with her family to Breckenridge where she graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1938. She went on to attend Tarleton College in Stephenville. Eunita married Glenn Taylor Jr. on July 21, 1942 in Breckenridge. They made their home in Stephens County, where they enjoyed ranching together while raising their five children. In addition to being a homemaker and a rancher, Eunita also worked as a bookkeeper for both the Stephens County Ag Extension Service and Cox Lumber Company. Mr. Taylor preceded her in death on January 9, 1983. She later married John Edward Trimble on December 23, 1992 in Breckenridge. John and Eunita enjoyed their years together traveling and spending summers in Indiana. Eunita was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Breckenridge where she was active in the United Methodist Women organization. She volunteered at the Breckenridge Library and the local nursing homes and loved to crochet, knit and play the piano. Eunita was a caring woman who loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Glen Taylor Jr. and one son, William Reed Taylor. Eunita is survived by her husband, John Trimble of Breckenridge; four children, Janice Taylor and husband, Herb of Salado, Charles Taylor of Fort Worth, Judy Simmons and husband, Jim of Arroyo City and Terry “Fuzz” Taylor and wife, Kim of Lubbock; one step-son, Carroll Edward Trimble and wife, Shirley of Jourdanton; thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Bertha Williamson
Bertha Mae Williamson, age 90, died September 21, 2011 in Fort Davis, Texas. She was born February 18, 1921 in Stevens County, Texas to John Lafate and Nina Maude Sides Polan. On October 16, 1938, Bertha Mae married C V Williamson. They were married 67 years when he predeceased her in 2006. She and C V had lived in Midland, Texas where they raised their three daughters near the community known then as Air Terminal. They then made their home in Las Vegas, Nevada for 35 years before moving to Alpine, Texas in 1998. Bertha Mae spent the last two years of her life at the Inn of Fort Davis’ Sullivan House in Fort Davis, Texas under the loving care of IOFD’s compassionate staff. She was a spunky, persevering woman of the Depression era. Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Dolly and Rayford Calhoun, Midland, TX; Charlsie and Johny Weyerts, Alpine, TX; Gayle and Alton Lewis, Alpine, TX; seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren; brother, Ray Polan of Fort Worth, Texas; and sister, Pansy Summers of Woodbury, Tennessee. Rev. Adren Woodard
EASTLAND – Reverend Adren J. Woodard, 91, of Breckenridge and formerly of Eastland, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011 in Odessa. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Eastland with Rev. Joseph Gastineau officiating. Burial followed in the Eastland City Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Friday, 6-8:00 P.M. Rev. Woodard was born on May 7, 1920 in Woodson, TX to Charlie Clinton & Nellie Elizabeth (Hudson) Woodard. He married Betty Jo Cline and together they had six daughters. He was an ordained Pentecostal minister of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ Apostolic World Christian Fellowship. He pastored in Eastland for several years before retiring and becoming a Security Officer. He held a certificate from the Defensive Tactics Institute. He loved his guns and was proud of his concealed handgun license. He loved his Bible, spending time with his family and enjoyed traveling, especially by air. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo; parents, sister, Shirley Ann Sampley; sister & brother-in-law, Willard & Erma Lee Liles; sister-in-law, Shirley Mae Woodard; brother, JC Woodard; 2 great-granddaughters, Ashley Ne’cole Williams and Stacy LeeAnn Soto; and grandson-in-law, Albert Leland (Burt) Williams. Survivors include his wife, Annette M. Woodard; 6 daughters, La’Nell Ruth Craft and husband Keith of Odessa, Annie Bell Pearson of Ballinger, Barbara Sue Gastineau & husband Joe of Omaha, Nebraska, Janis Lee Jobe and husband Tommy of Odessa, Brenda Joyce Michael and husband Gene of Booneville, Mississippi and Elizabeth Rosenbaum and husband Alan of Hope, Arkansas; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Janis Tilley of Ft. Glenn Scitern
Glenn Allen Scitern, age 43, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at his home near Cisco after a long courageous battle with cancer. Services will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Carey Scott officiating. Burial will be in Simpson Cemetery. Allen was born June 28, 1968 in Gorman Texas to Glenn Kathel Scitern and Margie Kathryn “Kathy” Caraway Scitern. He was a graduate of Gorman High School. He married Dena Faulk on July 11, 1998 at her parents home in the Kokomo Community. Allen worked for Ebba Iron for 17 years. He was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Ranger. He is survived by his wife, Dena Scitern of Cisco; son, Reece Scitern and a baby daughter, Laney Scitern both of the home; his parents, Glenn and Kathy Scitern of Gorman; two brothers, Stephen Scitern and wife, Shawnda of Anson and Scott Scitern and wife, Donna of Desdemona; two sisters, Becca Woodall and husband, Jimmy of Gorman and Jennifer Young and husband, Chad of Gorman; grandmothers, Bonnie Scitern of Gorman and Rozzelle Caraway of Gorman; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Monty and Faye Faulk of Cisco; brother-in-law, Steven Faulk of Fort Worth and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by both of his grandfathers, Jake Caraway and Alvis Scitern and an uncle, Gerald Scitern. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Virginia Seelig
FORT WORTH -- Virginia Garrett Seelig, 88, beloved wife, mother, singer and teacher, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday at Southcliff Baptist Church. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice, the School of Church Music, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary or Happy Hill Farm Academy. Virginia was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Eastland to Clyde and Sallie Garrett. Judge Garrett was a member of U.S. House of Representatives. After living in Washington, D.C., Virginia attended Hardin Simmons University where she received a bachelor’s degree. She married John Earl Seelig on Oct. 16, 1947. John and Virginia had two sons, Stephen and Timothy. In 1958, Mrs. Seelig joined the faculty of the School of Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where she taught for 27 years until her retirement. She received a master of music degree at the University of North Texas and did further study in Salzburg, Austria. As a singer, her many appearances included roles with the Dallas Opera, Casa Manana and as soloist for the Messiah presented for King Hussein and the Queen of Jordan. She and her longtime singing partner, Joe Ann Shelton, appeared throughout the U.S. as well as with Billy Graham crusades in the U.S. and England. In 1988, the seminary presented her with the Distinguished Service Award. The citation included the following: “Virginia Seelig was an influence on hundreds of young people who have served God in churches, schools and throughout the world. She is known for her singing, for the unique quality of her voice and her ability of communicate the true and deep meaning of the words she sings. She is known for her sense of humor and ability to enjoy life.” Survivors: Husband of 64 years, Dr. John Earl Seelig of Fort Worth; sons, Stephen and his wife, Bonita, and Timothy and his partner, Shawn. Stephen is the associate pastor of Second Baptist Church in Houston. Timothy is the artistic director of the San Fransisco Gay Men’s Chorus. She was also greatly loved by her grandchildren, Stephanie, John Mark, Corianna and Judson and their spouses. She took great delight in her great-grandchildren, Will, Jake and Clara Skye.
Leota Tidwell
ABILENE- Leota Tidwell, 90, died Saturday, September 17, 2011, at a local medical center. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2011, in Elmwood Memorial Park with Rev. Luke Back officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. Leota was born March 19, 1921 to Artie (Adkinson) and Bernard Tidwell in Rising Star, Texas. She retired in 1991 after working 35 years for the Paleozoic Society. Leota was a member of the Desk and Derrick Club and the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Artie Tidwell and sisters, Nona Sanders and Alene Pittman. Survivors include her nieces, Venita Rogers of Abilene and Judy Linville of Killeen, Texas and her dogs, Codie Linville and Buster Rogers.
Ellen Kanady
Ellen Kanady age 63, of Carbon, passed away Thursday September 15, 2011 in Eastland. Funeral services were held Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at the Leon River Cowboy Church with Pastor Paul Howie and R.D. Childres officiating. Burial was at the Murray Cemetery. Family visitation was held Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland. Ellen was born on July 15, 1948 in Ranger, the daughter of the late Delbert and Velma Edwards Cozart. On July 28, 1967 she married Ray Kanady in Ranger. Ellen was a member of the Leon River Cowboy Church and was actively involved in many aspects of the church. Ellen never missed any event that her children and grandchildren were involved in. Survivors include: Husband, Ray Kanady of Carbon; Sons, Chad Kanady and wife Sarah of Eastland; Jeff Kanady and wife Carroll of Breckenridge; Brothers, Dale Cozart and wife Carol of Cisco, Delbert Cozart and wife Patti of Little Elm; Sisters, Loretta Pelfrey of Stephenville, Norma McDonald and husband James of Breckenridge, Billie Jean Rogers of Ranger; Granddaughters, Kinley and Karlee; Grandsons, Kyler and Connor. Numerous nieces and nephews and adopted grandchildren. Preceded in death by: parents; Son, Kevin Kanady;;Brothers, Don Cozart and Kenneth Grice. Ruben Tolentino
Ruben Tolentino, 75, of Cisco passed away Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Hendrick Medical Center. Rosary was held at 6:30 PM Friday, September 16, 2011 at Kimbrough Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Father John Sostrich will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Ruben was born in Cisco, Texas to Francisco and Helidora (Gomez) Tolentino on July 29, 1936. Before retiring he worked in the maintenance department of Cisco College. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Survivors include, sisters, Margaret Torres and husband John of Cisco and Tommie Sigala and husband Paul of Abilene; brothers, Fred Tolentino and wife Louisa of Aqudeulce, California, Joe Tolentino and wife Mary of Abilene; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
Gerald Tucker
RISING STAR-Gerald Tucker, 74, of Rising Star, Texas died Wednesday September 14, 2011 in Abilene. A private memorial service will be held at Long Branch Tabernacle in Eastland County, Texas on Saturday September 17, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Arrangements by Summers-Chambers Funeral Home of Cisco, Texas. Gerald was born September 5, 1937 in Cisco, Texas to Roy and Bessie (Hardin) Tucker. He married Shirley Denton on March 3, 1955 in Cisco, Texas. They were married for fifty six years. He graduated from Cisco High School in 1955. He was a farmer and a rancher. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Jody. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of the home; his son, Gary Tucker of Eastland, Texas; his daughter, Rhonda Greenfield of Willow Park, Texas; his brother, Joe Tucker of Cisco, Texas; two sisters, Reba Burkes of Midland, Texas and Ray Nell Hancock of Fort Worth, Texas; his grandchildren, Shelby, Jody, Ashley, and Cass; and two great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Stacy Watson Memorial Fund, or to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
David Schoenrock
David Charles Schoenrock, 77, of Eastland, died on September 13, 2011 in an Abilene hospital. He was born on July 22, 1934 in Clifton, Texas to William John and Solvey Hanson Schoenrock. He had lived in Eastland for 30 years and was a Lutheran. He loved his dogs. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Survivors include a brother: Maurice C. Schoenrock; 3 nieces; 2 nephews; several great-nieces and great nephews. The family sends a special thank you to John V. Roach. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland, Texas.
Elvia Rodriguez
DUBLIN -- Elvia Valtierra Rodriguez, 39, passed away on Sept. 12, 2011 in Ft. Worth. Funeral: Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dublin. Burial: Dublin Liveoak Cemetery. Survivors: Husband, Chino; Sons, Edgar, Azael, Yahir, Gustavo and Issac; Daughters, Araceli and Litzy; Parents, Carlos and Maria Valtierra; and numerous other relatives and many, many friends who will miss her dearly.
Stella Rockey
Stella Marie Rockey, 87, joined Jesus in heaven on September 9, 2011 in Carrolton, Texas. She was born in Marks, Mississippi to William Thomas and Stella Jewell Smith Hollowell, on May 10, 1924. She was raised in Poplar Grove, Arkansas, and was one of 13 children. She was known by many names: Mother, Mom, Mama, Nana Re, Nana, Aunt Re, Pretty Nana, and Grandma. She will be sorely missed by too many to name. We know she will be watching over us though because that’s what angels do. She was preceded in death by her three husbands, Chester Boman, Connie McSweeney, and Leonard Rockey. When asked how she lost three husbands, she liked to say she loved them to death. Also preceding her are her daughter: Debbie Mann; 4 brothers; 2 sisters; and her parents. She raised four daughters and the three surviving her are Sue Cloud and husband Leo of Weatherford, Patsy Boman of Rockwell, Texas, and Linda Hillger of Midland, Texas. Also surviving her are her 10 grandchildren: Karren, Missie, David Lee, Lora, Xan, Cindy, Joey, Justin, David, and Dana; 13 grea-grandchildren; a brother: Edward Hollowell (Sonny) of Trenton, Arkansas; and 3 sisters: Mary Jackson of Arlington, Texas, Faye Watkins of Stuttgart, Arkansas, and Ann McCurley of Savannah, Missouri. Services were held at 2:30 PM, Tuesday, September 13, 2011, in Summers-Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Eastland. Burial was in Blake Cemetery, southwest of Rising Star, Texas. Visitation was from 6-8 PM, Monday, at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Summers-Baker Funeral Home of Eastland, Texas.
Jo Beth Winter
KERRVILLE – Jo Beth Winter, 98, formerly of Kerrville, TX passed away on Friday, September 9, 2011 in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Winter was born April 21, 1913 in Rising Star, TX the daughter of Robertson and Laura Horton. She married Annis Odell Winter on September 5, 1934 in Rising Star and was a member of the Eastern Star and First Baptist Church in Kerrville. Survivors include a son: Mike Winter and wife, Joani, nephews: Roy Hickman and wife, Lois, Phil Horton and wife Vicki, nieces: Mary Jo Lawless and husband, Darrell and Margaret Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Annis on May 17, 1976 and a son, Joe Dell on January 7, 1999. Celebration of life services was held 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at The Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville with Reverend Sam Ligon officiating. James Hamm
ABILENE- James Cody Hamm, 46, our beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, died Friday, September 9, 2011 at his home. Graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Dudley Cemetery directed by Abilene Funeral Home. James was born in Abilene on November 28, 1964. He attended Eula Schools and lived all his life in Abilene. Whether you called him son, bro, Uncle James or Hammbone, he was truly loved by all and will be forever missed. James was a very popular person and had many friends. Besides his family and friends, he loved his motorcycles and never passed up a chance to ride or work on them. He was a very skilled auto mechanic and would help out his friends and famiy with their mechanical repairs. His hobbies included a love for rock and roll music. He worked locally with several music groups as a sound and lighting technician. Another love was computers, and James could always answer your questions and was willing to help and share his knowledge with you about them. Survivors include his mother, Flora Lee Hamm of Abilene; two sisters, Marjorie Gilbreath and husband, Floyd of Eula and Linda Brockman of Abilene; two brothers, Jimmy Hamm of Abilene and Luther “Bud” Weeks of Eastland; a brother-in-law, Don Brockman of Abilene; and numerous nieces and nephews. CISCO- Troy Walton Gosnell, 87, of Cisco, passed away September 6, 2011, in Eastland. Services were Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 1:00 PM officiated by Dr. Kelvin J Kelley in the Kimbrough Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Kimbrough Funeral Home. Troy was born April 10, 1924, in Nocona, Texas, to Jesse Washington and Manie Leona (Cantrell) Gosnell. After attending school at Quail, Texas, he served in the US Army during WW II. After leaving the military, he moved to Cisco where he attended Cisco Junior College. He had worked for several Manufacturing Companies in Cisco. Troy and Frances Lucille Cook were married April 23, 1955, in Baird, Texas. They celebrated their 56th anniversary in April. Troy loved music. He was a talented musician and, at one time, had his own band. The guitar was his favorite instrument. He loved spending time with his family—especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a Baptist. Survivors are his wife, Frances, of Cisco; sons, Tim and wife, Sue, of Cisco and Troy Lynn and wife, Patricia, of Farmersville; daughters, Debra Blankenship, and husband, Max, of Cisco, Connie Hinds and husband, Wrey, of Round Rock; brother, Terry Gosnell; grandchildren, Tim Gosnell, Jr., Steven McLean, Becky Alvey, Molly Blankenship, Mason Hinds, Chandler Hinds; great-grandchildren, Dylan McLean, Tyler Alvey and Cynthia Alvey. Mr. Skiles was born in Cisco, Texas on January 14, 1930. He was the son of Hazel B. (Warren) and James Otis Skiles. He attended schools in Cisco and Big Spring. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army. A veteran of the Abilene Police Department, Mr. Skiles was both a police officer and criminal investigator during his career, retiring in 1991. He also had been a Taylor County Baliff for 7 1/2 years. Lloyd married Tommye Jesalyn Brasher on July 29, 1958 in Abilene. He was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Donna Goff. Survivors include his wife, Tommye Skiles of Plano; two sons, Roger Skiles, M.D. and wife Laura of Frisco and Stanley Skiles of Midlothian, Texas; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Janice Marie Mauldin, age 86, of Rising Star passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 in Rising Star. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Rising Star Chapel with Red Chamberlin officiating; burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery in Grosvenor. Viewing was in the Rising Star Chapel until the time of services. She was born on April 28, 1925 to Roy Patterson and wife Anna (McCoy) in Grayson County, KY. She married Luther Harold Mauldin in Yuma, Arizona on October 31, 1947. She was a Baptist. Janice worked as an Air Craft inspector. She is survived by her son, David Mauldin. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Luther on January 25, 2007.

Brimberry in Ranger, Texas. She moved to Abilene in 1942. She married Aubrey Ray Cole on July 19, 1946 in Abilene. Nadine was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1950. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Melba Graves. Fern “GG” Roberts, age 87, of Eastland, passed away Friday September 2, 2011 at her home. Funeral services were held Monday, September 5, 2011 at 11 am at the Daugherty St. Church of Christ in Eastland with Grandsons Steven and Todd Roberts, and Keith Hudgins officiating. Graveside services were held Tuesday at 1 pm at the Lamesa Memorial Cemetery in Lamesa with Mark Hackett officiating. Fern was born on November 8, 1923 in Point Texas the daughter of the late Clarence and Ruth Barrett Strickland. She married Hilburn Roberts on December 19, 1940 in Lamesa. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2009. Fern had been a resident of Eastland since 2002, formerly of Lamesa. She was Church of Christ member, and was an accomplished poet published in many Journals and Books. She wrote for the Christian Women’s Magazine, and a daily devotional called Power for Today, as well as the Lamesa Press Reporter. Mr. Mathews was born on September 9, 1918 in Dean Community, Texas to Rubin Waid and Callie (Cooksey) Mathews. He married Winnie McLendon on September 10, 1939 in Walters, Oklahoma. Mr. Mathews was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dean and was retired from farming and ranching. He and his wife Winnie were chosen Outstanding Agricultural Couple of the year by the Clay County Chamber of Commerce in 1984. Mr. Mathews was preceded in death by his parents and wife Winnie on August 3, 2011. EASTLAND – Dora Dean Weems Levens, 83, of Eastland, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011 in Eastland. Visitation was held Tuesday, September 6th at Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland from 9:00 am-10:00 am followed by a graveside service at 10:30 am at the Eastland Cemetery. Mrs. Levens was a resident of Valley View Health Care Center in Eastland, Texas. She was born on March 28, 1928, in Fisher County, to Amanda and Wesley Weems who preceded her in death. Dean married to Lindell Charles Levens on June 21, 1946 in Roby, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1973. She spent most of her life in Eastland, Texas. She was a dietitian at Eastland Hospital for many years. She retired in 1996. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley Weems and Robert Weems; and one sister Etta Pearl Stephens. Dean is survived by six brothers, David Weems, Donnie Weems, Danny Weems, Hugh Weems, Warren Weems, and Gene Weems; one sister, Priscilla Hamilton; six sisters-in-law, Carolyn Weems, Kathleen Weems, Arlisse Weems, Bernice Weems, Christeen Weems, and Carolyn Levens; a brother-in-law, Doug Hamilton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clinton Pierce
Clinton Pierce, 70, of Eastland, Texas died Wednesday August 31, 2011 in Fort Worth, Texas. Chapel Service will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Summers-Chambers Funeral Home in Cisco with Paul Howie officiating. Private burial will follow at the Murray cemetery. Visitation was Friday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Clinton was born July 14, 1941 in Gorman, Texas to Arless and Bonnie (Campbell) Pierce. He graduated from Cisco High School in 1959, and he was a lifetime Eastland County resident. Clinton was a supervisor at Eagle SWS, an Environmental Cleanup company. He always worked and played hard. He was a Team Roper, and an accomplished welder and blacksmith. He enjoyed restoring old cars especially his 1937 Chevy two door coupe. Clinton was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Lori Harrell, and his sister Glenna Warren. Survivors include his wife Ora Lee of Eastland; his sons Rex Pierce and wife Leigh Ann of Boerne, Texas, Robert Hill and wife Denise of Livingston, Texas; his daughter Kelly Pierce of Allen, Texas; his sister Brenda Lane and husband Don of Cisco, Texas; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, one aunt and one uncle. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and his faithful companions, Peanuts, his dog and Johnny, his cat. Herbert Weaver, Jr.
Herbert Thomas Weaver, Jr., 76, passed away on August 30, 2011 at a nursing facility in Tulsa, OK. He graduated from Eastland High School and from Baylor University. Employed with Curtin Matheson Scientific in Dallas, he was transferred to Houston in 1977, retiring from that company in 1993. Herbert was actively involved in Royal Ambassadors; as an adult, serving for 16 years as RA Counselor for five Dallas churches, as well as with Dallas Baptist Association, coordinating the wilderness camp at Camp Chuala. In 1980, he became RA Director for Union Baptist Association, directing the Leadership Training Camp from 1982 until 2002. He also served as the Region 14 Director for Texas Baptist Men and RA/Challengers Director and Baptist Men on Missions Coordinator for UBA. He was a member of South Main Baptist Church in Houston. Known affectionately as “Mr. Royal Ambassador” in Texas, he co-authored the book, “100 Years of Royal Ambassadors”, receiving an award from the Texas Baptist Historical Society. He is survived by his sister, Jana Weaver King; nieces, Leighann Dugger and husband Charles, and Lizabeth Schley and husband Steve; nephew, William King, DVM, Ph.D and wife, Catherine; great-nieces, Beth Matlock and husband Joe, Katey Brown, Ginna Hensley and husband Hunter, US Marine Corporal, Mary Grace Schley and Beverly King; great-nephews, Stephen Schley and Douglas King; and one great-great nephew, William Matlock. Also survived by one great-aunt, nine first cousins and families, and numerous Royal Ambassador friends. Herbert was preceded by his parents, Herbert Thomas Weaver, Sr. and Grace Mayo Weaver. Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Nowlin Anders Funeral Home in De Leon. Burial followed in De Leon Cemetery. Brother Leo Smith officiated the service. Loma Becker
Loma Faye Becker, 93, of Amarillo died Tuesday afternoon August 30, 2011. Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2011 in First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Corky Holland officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Becker was born March 27, 1918 in Carbon, Texas to H.O. and Anna Hearn. She was raised in Eastland County and graduated from Morton Valley High School in 1936. She continued her education at John Tarleton Agricultural College in Stephenville, Texas and then graduated from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Homemaking Education in 1940. She taught homemaking and was an Assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Eastland County, Texas before moving to Colorado where she was the Morgan County Home Demonstration Agent. She then taught Homemaking Education in Brush High School in Brush, Colorado until 1954. She married Harry Becker on September 29, 1946 in Brush. She and Harry were successful farmers near Brush and Hoyt, Colorado for more than 30 years. After retirement in 1980, they moved to Amarillo where she resided until her death. Loma Faye was saved in 1943 and was active in church her entire life. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School in the Hoyt Community Church for many years. They were active members of Paramount Baptist Church in Amarillo. Mrs. Becker was a member of First Baptist Church at the time of her death. Loma loved the Lord and her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed entertaining family. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; five sisters, Vida Reece, Opal Hearn, Inez Cogburn, Mary Heitschmidt, Joy Trout, and a brother, Claude Hearn. Survivors include a son, Steven Becker and wife R’Jana of Amarillo; a granddaughter Sara E’Lise and husband Ryan Esch of Denver, Colorado; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She married Jerry Walker on February 18, 1951 in Gustine. They lived in New Mexico from 1953 until moving back to Lake Brownwood in 1986. They moved from the lake to Rising Star in 2003. Mary Jo was a member of the Baptist Church, as well as a lifetime member Rebekah Lodge. She lived in Abilene 30 years before moving to Olney, Texas, where she lived 20 years before returning to Abilene. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Bobby Lee Clark and Lewis Metcalf. Billy Joe Moore, 85, of Granbury, died Monday, August 29, 2011 at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth. Service: 1 pm on September 9th in Acton at Good Shepherd Episcopal at 3600 Fall Creek Hwy. He began his career with TP Coal & Oil in Breckenridge as an Oil Scout and then became a Landman. He worked for several major oil companies. For the past 60 years he has been an Independent Landman, working all over the United States. Billy was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen. Alvis Scitern, age 88 of Gorman, passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 at the Comanche County Medical Center. Services were held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 1, 2011 at the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Jason Wilder officiating. Burial was at Simpson Cemetery. Alvis was born July 23, 1923 in Dickens County, Texas to Henry Lawson Scitern and Oza Rebecca ( Burleson) Scitern. He married Bonnie Louise Daniels on November 23, 1941 in Gorman, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. He was awarded the Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. He was a farmer and had lived in the area most of his life. In the past, he had worked as a carpenter with his Dad, Henry and brother, John. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife of almost 70 years, Bonnie Scitern of Gorman; son, Glenn Scitern and wife, Kathy of Gorman; two daughters, Melva Jordan of Eastland and LaVeda Scitern of Gorman; two sisters, Louise Tinkler of Abilene and Carolyn Foster and husband, Gene of Gorman; sister-in-law, Troy Scitern of Gorman; 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Frankie Lassiter
Frankie Maring Lassiter known, to all as “Frank”, went to be with his Lord and Savior August 26, 2011, at the age of 76. Frank was born in Cisco, Texas to Vernon and Evalena Lassiter August 30, 1934. Frank served his country in the U.S. Marines for a period of time. Frank was preceded in death by his wife and best friend of 53 years; two children; a great grandson; his parents; and two sisters. Frank will forever be remembered by three children, Lena “Sissie” Williams of Ranger, Texas, Carl Lassiter and wife Cissy of Hawley, Texas, and Danny Lassiter and wife Vicki of Eastland, Texas; three brothers, Vernon Lee“Sonny” Lassiter and wife Sharon of Lake Whitney, Floyd Lassiter and wife Linda of Oklahoma, and Alton Lassiter and wife Glenda of Ranger, Texas; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and many friends. First and foremost he loved his family but Frank loved life in general. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend but most of all an amazing man to all. He took care of all and opened his home to anyone who needed a warm place to keep them safe and lay their head a night. His happiest times were having his grandbabies running around or sitting at a table playing cards when all his family was together. Frank was at peace knowing he was being welcomed by his Lord and Savior with open arms. A memorial service was held August 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at 435 West Main St. Ranger, Texas 76470. Lois Browning
Lois Winnell McCormick Browning, age 89, passed away on August 25, 2011 at 11:35 a.m., at Permian Regional Medical Center in Andrews, Texas after a lengthy illness. She was born on January 22, 1922 in Dublin, Erath County, Texas to the late Hiram C. and Gracie Mae Ewing Bettis. She married J. D. McCormick, Jr., on May 3, 1936. They made their home in Roby, Texas in Fisher County for over 40 years. He preceded her in death. Winnell moved to Gorman, Texas in 1980 after marrying Mr. Buddy Bryant. Buddy passed from this world July 16, 1983 after a lengthy illness. Subsequently, Winnell met Mr. W. C. Browning of Gorman while serving their Lord through First Baptist Church in Gorman and were united in marriage April 4, 1987. W. C. passed from this world on September 29, 2004. In 2005 Winnell moved to Andrews, Texas to live near her son Ron. Winnell, as she was known to friends and family, attended school and received her LVN in August 1966 in Sweetwater, Texas where she worked at the Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater, Texas and then at the Roby Nursing home. She enjoyed her church and church family as she loved the Lord and taught Sunday school for more than 60 years. Through the trials of life, she remained a good and faithful servant. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Annette, brother Calvin Bettis, two sisters Ama Lee Taylor and Valerie Blair. Survivors include two sons Ronney McCormick and wife Pam of Andrews and Kevin McCormick and wife Susan of Forney, 8 grandchildren and 4 great children. She is also survived by one sister, Loraine Sutton of Valley Mills, Texas and one brother William Hiram Bettis of Stafford, Texas. Arrangements are pending at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Gorman, TX and services are scheduled at First Baptist Gorman at 10:00 A. M. with burial in Roby, Texas.
Mildred Bean
EASTLAND- Mildred Bean, age 90, of Eastland, passed away Thursday August 25, 2011 in Dallas. Funeral services were held Tuesday August 30, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at the First Christian Church in Eastland with Jim Wright officiating. Burial was at the Eastland City Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Mildred was born and raised in Eastland. She met and married Luther L. Bean and lived in Big Spring most of her married life. She was very involved in the First Christian Church in Big Spring and loved gardening and her yard. After her husband’s death in 1975, she moved back to Eastland. She lived there until 2006. Mildred then moved to Dallas and lived in Presbyterian Village North. The family was able to celebrate her 90th birthday in June. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the First Christian Church, 215 S. Lamar, Eastland Texas 76448. Mac Millan Ray, Sr.

GOLD BEACH, OR.- Mac Ray Sr. passed away August 22, 2011, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Orgegon at the young age of 61. He was born in Los Angeles, California to Lavonia Wanda Steen and Oran Charles Ray, Sr. on 12-31-1949. While growing up, he traveled all around gracing everyone he met with his wonderful presence and always left a lasting impression. He taught himself many things throughout the years including his ability to tinker and fix just about everything that presented a challenge. Being the tinker and entrepreneur that he was, he invented and stunned himself and many others with his abilities on a daily basis. He tourned Germany while he was in the army in the mid 70’s and brought many stories and memories back with him. When he was back in the states he finished his military career in California before moving back to his native land of Texas. In the peaceful state that he is in now, he can ride his motorcycle off into the sunset every day or night whichever suits his feelings at the moment of time. Proceeding in death he leaves behind his eldest son Donavon Ray and wife Jessica with their two children Eric and Kathleen; daughter Angela Ray Sutton and husband Mark with their two children Andrew and Gabi; son Mac Ray Jr. and wife Ashley with their two children Paitlynn and Adelyn; son Travis Ray and fiancee’ Lydia with their two children Scout and Remi. Pop may you rest peaceful and know you will be truly missed.

GORDON - Jean Gardner Keith, 83, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at her home on Lake Palo Pinto. Visitation was held Friday, August 26, 2011 from 6~8:00 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home in Strawn. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Auust 27, 2011 in the New Gordon Cemetery with Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Jean was born January 1, 1928 to Julius DeValt Gardner and Eugenia Ruth Kemp in Hamburg, Arkansas. She graduated from Little Rock High School and attended Draughan’s Business College. She married K. Glenn Keith on May 5, 1949 in El Paso, TX. Survivors include her husband, K. Glenn Keith; two sons, David Glenn Keith and wife Vicki and Daniel Gene Keith and wife Betty; five grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
Gertrude 'Tudie' Petty
CISCO- Gertrude “Tudie” Fry Petty, age 88, of Cisco, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011 in Cisco. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Methodist Church in Zephyr, TX. Gertrude was born on August 24, 1922 in Grosvenor, TX to M. E. and Lena (Miller) Fry. She married John Edwin Petty on July 18, 1941, in Brown County, TX; the youngest of a large family. Gertrude was a homemaker, taking care of her family. She also worked as a postal clerk for some time with the U.S. Postal Service. She and John were involved in raising Polled Hereford cattle for many years. Gertrude was an active member of the Methodist Church. She was also involved in various organizations such as the Putnam Women’s Study Club, Zephyr Home Demonstration Club, and the Pollettes. Gertrude loved life and all of the wonderful people whom she met along the way. She was always involved in her children’s activities through the years, as well as various civic activities. Gertrude enjoyed different types of art; including painting china. After returning to the Brown County area, Gertrude and John reconnect with their old high school classmates and enjoyed many get togethers with them. Gertrude was loved by all who knew her and she will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to a charity of your choice in her memory. Mrs. Petty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; John Edwin Petty, 2 brothers and their wives, and 1 sister and her husband. Thelma Clemmer Brady Hall
HAMBY - Thelma Clemmer Brady Hall, 95, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Clyde Nursing Center. The daughter of Bessie Pearl (Moore) and Henry Ellis Clemmer, she was born on November 1, 1915 in Hamby, Texas. She attended school at Rock Hill and graduated from Cisco High School. In 1928 at the age of twelve, she was baptized in Dead Man Creek. Thelma was a life long member of Hamby Baptist Church and in more recent years enjoyed being a part of the “Keen Agers” at the church. Thelma and her first husband, Ernest S. Brady, lived in the Hamby Community and for a time in Merkel. Mr. Brady preceded her in death in 1968. Mr. Brad was a farmer, and Thelma was also a product of the land. She loved watching the crops grow, and tending her garden and flowers around her home. In 1977, she married J.D. Hall. Mr. Hall also preceded her in death in 1995. They were residents of Hamby. Throughout her life, Thelma loved to crochet and work outdoors. She was a talented artist and a great cook. She especially loved tending to her irises at her house in Hamby, and she loved to play dominoes. In addition to her husbands, Thelma was preceded in death by infant twin daughters; her parents; three sisters and two brothers. Survivors are her son, Ed Brady and wife Mary Ann of Hamby; daughter, Barbara Sutton and husband Ronnie of Granbury; and stepson, Cliff “Pete” Hall of Downey, Calif.; four grandchildren and spouses, Zach Brady and Dani, Amber Brady, Seth Sutton and Meredith, and Gabe Sutton and Lizzie; and eight great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma’s life was remembered and celebrated at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 21, 2011 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel in Abilene, with grandchildren officiating. Burial followed in Hamby Cemetery. Donald was born in Amarillo, Texas to Donald Roberson, Sr. and Barbara Ann Bishop Roberson. He attended Strawn High School, served in the United States Air Force and worked at Texas Products Plant in Strawn. He liked to tinker with cars. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Kaden Russell. Donald is survived by his mother, Barbara Ann Roberson; two sons, Kris Russell and Donald Ray Roberson, III of Breckenridge; one daughter, Julie Ann Roberson of Irving; and two grandchildren, Payton Russell and Taryn Russell.
Shirley Fischer
CISCO- Shirley Fischer died August 17, 2011 at the age of 70 after a battle with cancer. She was born in Independence, Kansas on December 23, 1940 to Henery and Pearlena Shull. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and enjoyed taking care of others as a home care provider for those who needed her care. She was married to Don Fischer on April 11, 1959 in Independence, Kansas. They were married for 52 years. He survives her. She is also survived by son, Richard Fischer and wife Phylis Woods of Cisco; daughter, Sue Ann Carter of St. Louis, MO., daughter, Annette Wright and husband C.D. Wright of Abilene; and son, William (Bill) Fischer and wife April Fischer of Gorman. She is survived by 14 grandkids and 9 great-grandkids. She is also survived by a brother, Jack and wife Carol Shull of Sedan, KS, brother, Roy Shull of Sedan, KS; sister, Patricia and husband Ed Capansky of Wichita, KS; brother, Virgal and wife Wilibee Shull of Sedan, KS and sister, Nora Mae Myers of Sedan, KS. Predeceased by mother and father, Henery and Pearlena Shull; brother, Dean Shull; brother, Larry Shull; and sister, Artic Irene. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Nimrod Cemetery presided by Wayne Webb with Tim Thompson assisting. John Lee
John G. Lee., age 84, of Rising Star passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 in the Comanche County Hospital. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Bible Baptist Church in Rising Star with Bill Dobb officiating; burial followed in the Blake Cemetery. Visitation was on Wednesday, August 17th from 6 – 7 p.m. at the Higginbotham Chapel in Rising Star. He was born on February 12, 1927 to Tom D. and Floria (Kirby) Lee in Cross Plains. John married LaVern Roberts in Cross Plains on January 14, 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and after leaving the service, he started a drilling company then after retirement he did farming and ranching. He served as the minister of Bible Baptist Church for several years. He is survived by his wife, LaVern Lee of Rising Star, a daughter, Jan Clark of Rising Star and son, John David Lee of Rising Star; seven grandchildren and two great-grand- children.

STRAWN – Thomas Allen Hale went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Big Lake, TX, where he had lived for several years. Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the New Gordon Cemetery in Gordon, TX with Rev. Mike Orsini officiating and under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Strawn. Thomas was born in Strawn on March 9, 1938 to Harvey Hale and Lucille DeWitt Hale. He graduated from Strawn High School where he played football. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in June, 1967. He worked in the oil fields, liked to fish and work and was a Baptist. Survivors include two brothers, Harvey K. Hale of Mertzon, TX and Bill Hale of Cleo Springs, OK; and one sister, Joann Bearden of Mingus, TX.

CISCO- Elizabeth “Beth” DeAnn Chambers, age 31, of Cisco, passed away Monday, August 15, 2011 at her home. Beth was born in Arlington, Texas on February 16, 1980 to Bural Chambers and Mickey Martin Chambers. Beth was a graduate of Moran High School, and had been a resident of Cisco for the last 25 years, formerly of Mansfield. Beth was known to be a loyal friend, and loved to give to others. EASTLAND- James Allen Lang, 63, passed away suddenly this past Sunday, August 14, 2011. Allen was born March 17, 1948 to Eugene Lang, Jr. and Jewell Faye Lang in Abilene, Texas. Allen is survived by his mother, his two sons, Michael Shawn Lang of Austin, Texas and Michael Shane Loague of Odessa, Texas; and daughter, Tonya Marie Lang, of Cedar Creek, Texas. Allen has five living siblings, Freddy, Bobby, Dale, Diane and Mary and numerous nieces and nephews. Allen’s favorite past times included spending time with his grandchildren, Cory, Dustin, Brendi and Shane. Allen also enjoyed watching Texas Rangers baseball and was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Allen worked his entire adult life in the oil fields of West Texas and retired after 30 years. Allen took it upon himself to care for his mother and eventually moved her back to Eastland Texas where they lived together since 2005. We will forever miss you Dad & Pe-Paw! Sherod was born May 11, 1923 in Hamilton County, Texas to Sherod William Thompson, Sr. and Lenora Bell (Harvey) Thompson. He married Mary “Tince” Freeman on April 22, 1944 in Howard County, Texas and she preceded him in death on November 30, 2007. Mr. Thompson was a farmer. Sherod was also a Baptist. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. He is survived by his son, Larry Thompson and wife, Kristi of Gorman, Texas; daughter, Lenora Speer and husband, Jessie of Ranger, Texas; daughter, Doris Marshall and husband, Jerry of Temple, Texas; fourteen Grandchildren and twenty-four Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ethel Mae Johnston and by his parents, five brothers and nine sisters.

RANGER – Wilburn “Red” Honea, age 82, of Ranger, Texas, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at home with his family. Funeral services were held on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Summers-Bakker Funeral Chapel in Eastland with Jonathan Storment officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Ranger. Visitation was held on Sunday at the funeral home from 6:00 -8:00 pm. Red was born in Cisco, Texas on July 12, 1929 to Floyd and Alma Honea. He was a hard worker that loved spending time in the outdoors. He had a passion for life and growing up you would always find him fishing, riding dune buggies or working on his cars. More than anything Red loved his family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they would always bring a smile to his face. He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnnie Honea and his parents, Floyd and Alma. Red is survived by his wife, Lovelle; his daughter, Sherry; his son, Ben; six grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; his sisters, Margaret Duggan, Sarah Gailey and Linda Jennings.
Esther Stacy
EASTLAND – Esther Stacy, age 99, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 in Ranger, Texas. Funeral services were held on Friday August 12, 2011 at 10:00 am at First Baptist Church Eastland with graveside services at 2:00 pm at White Chapel Cemetery in Coleman. Visitation was held on Thursday from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at Summers-Bakker Funeral Home in Eastland. Esther Laura Powe was born on July 17, 1912 in Runnels County, Texas. She was one of seven children born to Rufus Oliver and Mary Frances (Andrews) Powe. Although Esther’s father died when she was only six years old her father had taught his children that “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches”. After her father’s death she and her siblings were raised by their mother who was able to share crop for a living and raise her children with the utmost care. She taught them to work and live by the precepts of the Bible. Esther’s mother always quoted to them 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15 to make sure they had good work ethics. Esther accepted the Lord as her savior as a young girl and was baptized in a creek in Runnels County. Esther married Melvin Daniel Stacy on September 15, 1930 in Coleman, Texas. After marriage they moved to McCamey for work with the oil field. Esther was a homemaker and finally after her two girls started school went to work at the Security State Bank, first in the bookkeeping department then as a teller. Esther and Melvin had strong ties to Coleman so they spent every penny they could spare to purchasing acreage in Coleman. They hoped to one day be able to return there to live. They were able to later move to Coleman and start their lives as ranchers. Esther was a devoted wife, mother, friend and Christian. She raised her children armed to succeed in this world and be able to hold their head up high giving them the Christian base needed. No foot crossed her door that left hungry or sad. She always was the forever hostess. She was a member of the Coleman Order of the Eastern Star and of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, five brothers, one sister and one son Daniel Ray Stacy. Esther is survived by her daughter-in-law, Carlene Peeples Stacy of Midland, TX; her daughters, Beverly Ruth Stacy Dittmer and husband Paul of Durango, Colorado and Karen Stacy of Eastland, TX; seventeen grandchildren, twenty two great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Delmon Eaves
Delmon Fred Eaves, age 79 of Gorman, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2011 in Ennis, Texas. Services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with nephew, Glendal Laminack officiating. Burial will follow at Simpson Cemetery. Fred was born November 1, 1931 in the Kokomo Community to F.C. (Tidy) Eaves and Erma (Neill) Eaves. He married Joyce Lavelle Graham on April 10, 1952 in Kokomo. Fred retired from Texas Electric Service Company in 1986 after 28 years of service. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and the caretaker of the Kokomo Community and Simpson Cemetery. He was also a member of the Kokomo Baptist Church. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his son, Mark Eaves and wife, Margaret of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Deliah Lewis and husband, Randy of Ennis; two sisters, Verna Laminack of Fort Worth and Louise Brown of Lake Jackson; three grandsons, Christopher Lewis of Ennis, Jonathan Lewis of Ennis and Preston Eaves of Charlotte, NC; a host of nieces and nephews and many “near children”. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joyce of 53 years, one sister, Verda Mae Norris, one brother, Neill Eaves and two nephews Mack Eaves and Kenneth Eaves. Billy Nall, Jr.
RISING STAR- Billy Ray Nall, Jr, age 47, of Rising Star passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 in Abilene at Hendricks Medical Center. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Rising Star with Terry Simmons officiating; burial followed in the Pioneer Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, August 11th at 803 N. Main, Rising Star, TX 76471. He was born on September 14, 1963 to Patsy Jo (Burkhaulter) and Billy Ray Nall, Sr. in McCamey, Texas. Billy worked as a machinist at SMK Fabrications and for Vicars Machine, as well as for Charles Morgan. He married Tricia Fox on August 7, 1993 at First Baptist Church in Rising Star. He lived in Rising Star for 41 years and served on the Rising Star Board of Trustees and as a volunteer firefighter and 1st responder for many years. EASTLAND – Rusty Carl Boner, 30, departed this life Sunday, August 7, 2011. He was born in Eastland to Patricia Susan Bishop of Ranger and Robert Ray Boner. Services were held for him Friday, August 12, 2011 at the Eastland Cemetery. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Brandi Boner of Kermit, TX; his son, Aaron Lee Boner of Kermit; Destiny Rose Boner of Kermit, Karen Marie Boner of Kermit and Hadessa Boner of Lubbock; his sister, Rachel Boner of Cisco, Amy Whaley of Monahans, Jenifer Jordan of Houston, Scott Renko of Houston; and his step-dad, Fidel Gallegoes, who he loved and cherished like a father; and many nieces and nephews he loved like his own. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dusty Ray Boner; and father, Robert Ray Boner. He enjoyed spending time outdoors camping, swimming, fishing and enjoying nature. He never came across an animal who didn’t love him. He loved his wife, kids and family and spending time with them. He will always be missed and we will carry him in our hearts forever.

RANGER – David Alexander Studdard, 57, of Ranger, died Sunday, August 7, 2011 in Abilene. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the family home, 911 Walnut St, Ranger, TX. David was born July 7, 1954 in Emery, Georgia to William and Martha (Williams) Studdard. He married Sarah Fultz on May 17, 2003 in Carbon. He was a truck driver for many years. He had been a resident of Ranger for over 20 years, formerly of Athens, Georgia. The most important thing in David’s life was being a dedicated grandfather to his grandsons, Justin, Michael and David. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandmother, Viola Williams. Survivors include his wife, Sarah of Ranger; one daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie & Kevin Plowman of Eastland; one brother, Billy Studdard of Georgia; 4 sisters, Janet Morris of Colbert, Georgia, Sherry Young of Sandersville, Georgia, and Nancy Studdard and Susie Sheppard both of Georgia; 3 grandchildren, Justin McGee, Michael Plowman and David Plowman; two great-grandchildren, Colt and Katlin.
Pauline Lee
EASTLAND - Pauline Lemaster Lee, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away August 7, 2011 at her residence at The Woodlands Assisted Living Center in Eastland. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Daugherty St. Church of Christ with Larry Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastland City Cemetery. She was born in Amy, West Virginia on June 27, 1916 to Cora and W. S. (Scott) Lemaster. In 1920, the family moved to Eastland County. Pauline was educated at Desdemona Grammar School and Desdemona High School, graduating in 1932. From her schooling, she obtained a love of poetry and reading that would be a joy for her for the rest of her life. She was also the seamstress for her family, and sewing remained a significant part of her life. In 1935, she married J. H. (Jack) Lee, who was to be her beloved husband for 70 years. They moved to Eastland in 1942. Pauline was a homemaker and helper in her husband’s independent oil and gas business. She worked in the PTA, was an early member of Eastland Pythian Lodge, and was, for two years, president of the Music Study Club. She loved Bible study, especially Gary Adams’ classes at Cisco Junior College. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ from 1929 until her death. Pauline was preceded in death by her husband; by her brothers Scotty, James, and Roy; and by a sister, Iris. Her son, Lanny, daughter, Lela, son-in-law, Norman Wikner, granddaughter, Elena Lee Wikner, sister, Grace Cummins, and many nieces and nephews survive her. The family would like to thank the Woodlands’ staff for their loving care during her three years there.
Pauline Breneman
RANGER- Pauline Laverne Bowen Breneman, 87, of Ranger passed away peacefully August 7, 2011 after a lengthy illness with her family by her side. Family visitation was held on August 8, 2011 from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services were held August 9, 2011 at 10:00 am, both held at Edwards Funeral Home in Ranger. No graveside services. Pauline was born July 11, 1924 in Ranger, Texas. The youngest of 5 daughters of the late Oliver Calvin & Pearlie Mae Bowen. She attended Colony School outside of Ranger. Pauline and her husband, Chester H. Breneman, lived in Hutchins for a few years before moving back to her home town of Ranger in 1970 where they raised their 4 children. Pauline worked for Eastland Memorial Hospital for 15 years, retiring at age 72 in 1996, being the oldest employee at the time for the hospital. Pauline was a past member of Order of Eastern Star, a Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader, and did some baby-sitting, but was mostly known for her many talents she acquired by being a homemaker for the majority of her life. She worked harder than most employed people do. Pauline always had a bountiful garden and what she didn’t give away to friends and family, she cooked and canned everything under the sun. Many fruit trees and those darn pecan trees, always had nuts or limbs to pick up after a strong wind. When growing season was over, she would get busy either sewing, knitting, embroidering, crocheting or quilting. When her children were small most of their clothes were handmade. As adults they have all received many treasured quilts, blankets, afghans & table cloths to name a few items made with her loving hands. Not to mention grandkids and a few others who have received many priceless quilts and other handmade items as well. If you ever stopped by her house for a visit within just a few minutes she would be off in the kitchen to whip up something to eat, no one would ever leave Pauline’s hungry. Her children have tried to duplicate many of her famous dishes some of which are close, but Pauline was known for being an excellent home-style country cook. Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Chester on January 3, 1981, sisters Dorothy Carr on July 16, 2005 and Mae Isabell on April 15, 2009, and 1 sister Verble Lee Bowen who passed away 7 months before Pauline was born. Pauline is survived by her children, Karen Williamson & husband Jerry of Morton Valley, Leon Breneman & wife Melody of Alvin, Jon Breneman of Lake Leon, Marian Cook & husband Bill of Meridian. Grandkids- Stacy, Paul, Patrick & wife Michelle, Wendy & husband James, Kalyn & Rylee; Great grandchildren- Caeden & Ayzlee, and baby boy McGruder arriving in September. And 1 sister, Una “Dude” Beck. And many other family members, Richard, Miles, Marti, Heath, Maria, Amadeo, Francesca, Lucia, Avila, Meagan, Pat, Patrick, Bethany, Avery, April, Ryan & Leah and many, many wonderful nieces & nephews. Please join us for a celebration of her life and remember our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. J.C. Butler
ABILENE- J.C. Butler, 72, of Abilene, died at his home Friday, August 5, 2011. A celebration of his life was held Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the Piersall Benton Chapel in Abilene. A graveside service followed at 2 p.m. in the Rising Star Cemetery. J.C.’s grandsons served as pallbearers. J.C. was born on September 28, 1938 in Cone, Texas to Fred and Leona Butler. The family moved to Rising Star in the late 40’s where J.C. attended and graduated from Rising Star High School. He was an outstanding high school athlete in basketball and football and acquired many life-long friends through those sports. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and was stationed at Matagorda Island where he met and married Shirley Fowler. Life led him to Clovis, N.M.; Columbus, Ohio and he and his wife settled in Tioga, WV. They had three sons and one daughter. After his time in the military, J.C. worked for Sherwin Williams Paint, Bekins and United Van Lines for many years before returning to Rising Star where he married his childhood sweetheart Jettie Duggan in 1981. Jettie had three daughters. In 1984 they moved to Abilene where J.C. worked for Abilene State School, Food Emporium, and Shaw Mail Carrier Contractors. Rheumatoid arthritis forced him to retire at age 50, but he kept busy working for neighbors, helping them out with any need. Preceding him in death were his father and mother as well as two brothers, James and C.W. Survivors are his wife, Jettie; one sister, Maurene McReynolds and husband Elmer; three sons, Johnny and wife Linda of Sanger, TX, Billy and wife Lacey of St. Mary’s, GA, and Harold of Abilene; and one daughter, Dora Phillips and husband Mark of Hillsville, VA. He is also survived by three step daughters, Charlene Bailey and husband Joe of Abilene, Darlene Perrin and husband David of Granbury, and Gari Sue Carroll and husband Brandon of Granbury; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members, friends and loved ones. Willie 'Jack' Snodgrass
Willie “Jack” Snodgrass, 84, was born April 17, 1927 passed away in Deerfield Beach, Florida on August 4, 2011. Survivors include sisters Anne Murray and Dorothy Tracy of Eastland; daughters, Sandy Foster of Norman, Oklahoma and Stacy Dochoda of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandsons, Brad and Greg Foster of Chicago, Illinois, Josh and Kyle Dochoda; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth “Libby” and Charlie Foster. Presiding him in death were his cherished wife of forty-five years, Jean Snodgrass; sister Lottie Fox and brothers Bennie and Harold Snodgrass. Jack grew up in Carbon, Texas helping tend his family farm. He joined the Air Force in 1946 and served for twenty years in numerous locations including Savannah, Georgia, Okinawa, Fairbanks, Alaska, Napa Valley, California, Wiesbaden, German and Midwest City, Oklahoma. After retiring from the Air Force, Jack worked for the FAA in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Jack loved football and frequently attended Oklahoma Sooners’ games in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was an avid hunter enjoying an annual trip to Colorado to camp and deer hunt with his friends Hoyt and Sam. He had a mechanical gift that he used for all forms of electronic, home and car repair at home and for neighbors and friends. As a hobby he restored old Mustangs. He grew a bountiful garden and enjoyed sharing with all his friends. He retired to south Florida enjoying the weather and new friends he made. Later in life he enjoyed ballroom dancing to the astonishment of his two daughters. No one was a stranger; he was quick to laugh and share a colorful expression.

Mrs. Mathews was born on February 11, 1919 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Thad and Frances (Crumley) McLendon. She married R.C. Mathews on September 10, 1939 in Walters, Oklahoma. Mrs. Mathews was a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church in Dean, Texas and she taught Sunday school for many years. She and husband R.C. were named Outstanding Agricultural Couple by the Clay County Chamber of Commerce in 1984. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Zora Collins and Naomi Franklin. Survivors include her husband R.C. Mathews of Dean, Texas; one daughter, Judy Cantwell of Dean, Texas; three sons, Wayne Mathews and wife Clara of Ranger, Texas, Don Mathews and wife Betty of Olney, Texas and Mark Mathews of Henrietta, Texas; one sister, Gay West and husband Delbert of Lubbock, Texas; one brother, Ezra McLendon and wife Verda of Wichita Falls, Texas; eight grandchildren, Christy, Lyndsay, Riley, Brad, Jarrett, John, Clint and Clay; seven great-grandchildren, Eric, Mia, Ross, Tye, Joey, Evan and Marshall. CISCO- David Babb Ewell, age 72, of Cisco, Texas, passed away Monday, August 1, 2011, at his home in Cisco. Private graveside services were held on Wednesday morning, August 3, 2011, at the Santa Anna Cemetery in Santa Anna, Texas, with family members conducting the service. David was born January 15, 1939, in Abilene, Texas, to James Hugh Ewell, Sr., and Thelma Babb Ewell. He grew up in Cisco, Texas, and attended Cisco schools through the 10th grade when he entered the U. S. Navy at age 17. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton and at the Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, Texas. He returned to Cisco following his military service where he worked as a butcher and a paint contractor. He attended the First Methodist Church of Cisco. Survivors include a daughter, Kristi Leigh Phillips and husband Roy of Bonham, Texas; a brother, James Ewell and wife Ruby of DeSoto, Texas; 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister.
Charles Boney
Charles Everett Boney, 79, of Ranger died on Sunday, July 31, 2011 in an Eastland hospital. He was born on June 7, 1932 in Ranger to Manual Cecil and Ethel Lee Boney. He was a retired backhoe operator for the City of Eastland. He enjoyed ranching and walking through the pasture with his dog. Survivors include his wife: Ruby Faye Boney of Ranger, brother: Gerald Jennings of Weatherford and his beloved dog, Toby. Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Bullock Cemetery with Rev. Gerald Gunstanson officiating. Visitation was from 6-8 PM, Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home in Ranger. Luciano “Chano” Juarez-Tapia, 43, of Desdemona, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2011 in Dublin. He was born on October 26, 1967 to Timeto Juarez and Maria De La Cruz Tapia in Guanjuato, Mexico. He married Yoelda Juarez Robles on July 10, 2010 in De Leon. Luciano was employed as a ranch hand and he loved to work. He also loved to attend his church. He was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispania. He is survived by his wife, Yoelda Juarez; father, Timeto Juarez; mother, Maria De La Cruz Tapia; sons, Edilberto Juarez, Juan Juarez, Andres Juarez and Jose Juarez; brothers, Moises Juarez, Sergio Juarez, Pedro Juarez, Juan Jose Juarez, and Hugo Juarez; and sisters, Grisel Juarez, Anabel Juarez, Eulalia Juarez and Laura Juarez. He was born on September 6, 1936 to Jesse Price and Louanna (Jordan) Jones in Marshall, Texas. He married Patricia A. O’Learey on November 29, 1963 in Marshall, Texas. He worked as a Realtor. Cremation was by Kimbrough Funeral Home of Cisco. Jane was born July 9, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, to James Edwin (“Smilin Ed”) and Ruth (Burroughs) McConnell. She attended Sacred Heart Convent in Chicago and Canoga Park High School in Canoga, CA. She met Rube Cozart, and they were married in 1961 in Breckenridge, Texas. She enjoyed being a housewife and worked outside the home as a Horse Breeder. Jane was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Cisco. Survivors are two sons, William Shimp and David Cozart of Cisco; daughter, LorriePritchard of Cisco, and stepson, Steve Cozart of Cisco; grandchildren, Chris Cozart of Wichita Falls and Kenneth Shimp of Arlington, Nicole Vanhoff of Phoenix, Arizona, Lacy Shimp of Cisco, Danny Shimp of Abilene and numerous great-grandchildren.
Donnice Whitehead
Donnice Jean Whitehead, 73, of Abilene passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011, at her home. A graveside service will be Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at 10:00 AM in the Cisco Oakwood Cemetery officiated by Pastor Mark Hewitt, son-in-law, and under the direction of Kimbrough Funeral Home. Donnice was born in Cisco, Texas, on April 14, 1938, to Frank and Leta Mae ( Duncan) Johnson. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Finis B. (Buck) Whitehead for 54 wonderful years. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was known as “MaMaw”, “Mona” and “Mona Jean”. She worked as a secretary in a middle school, and was a member of the Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. Donnice is survived by her husband of Abilene; daughter, Kerri Hewitt & husband, Mark, of Abilene; son, Frank Buck Whitehead & wife, Beverly, of Shreveport, LA & brother, Douglas Johnson & wife, Joan, of Cleburne, TX, five grandchildren & two great-grandchildren. Marlene J. Weeks, 70, of Edwardsville Kansas, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011. Marlene was born August 16th, 1940 to Rev, Edward F. Baker Sr. and Estelle M. Myers-Baker. She was the 5th of 10 children. Both parents her sister Yvonne Baker-Crump, Marlin Baker, and Leonard Baker precede her in death. She is survived by Rev. Edward F. Baker Jr. (Newark, NJ) Willa Mae Curd (Dover, DE) Sonja Baker-Bunkley (Dover, DE) Patricia A Baker-Wallace (Birmingham, AL), Richard H Baker (Dover, DE), and Bernard J Baker (Salina, KS). She married Edward Morrison and from this union had (6) children. Patricia Morrison (Kansas City, KS) Estelle Morrison-Smith (Oklahoma City, OK), Sonja Morrison-Johnson (Dallas, TX), Christina Morrison-Hamilton (Cisco, TX) Thomas Morrison (Tampa, FL), Nathaniel Morrison (Fredericksburg, VA). She shared a life with Herman Gene Johnson and out that union had (3) children Diedre Johnson-Castoreno (San Antonio, TX) Herman Johnson (Austin, TX) and Darryl Johnson (Dover, DE). She later married Oscar T. Weeks and was blessed to receive Janie Weeks-Fletcher (Cisco, TX) as a step-daughter and had two children Celia Weeks-Watts (San Antonio, TX) and Oscar Weeks (Mannassa, VA). Marlene leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Marlene was a member of the Church of Later Day Saints and worked on and off as an LVN. She enjoyed meeting new people and has touched many lives. Services will be this Saturday, July 30th in Edwardsville, KS.

Cpl. Taylor Knauf Hopson, 21, of Garland and Sanger, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. He was born on August 28, 1989 in Denton to Steven Trent Hopson and Alicia Gordon Knauf. He was a Corporal in the Marine Corps and was a member of the Canyon Creek Baptist Church. He contributed his time to victims of Katrina, Genesis Women’s Shelter, and participated in the Meals on Wheels programs. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 1:45 p.m. at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. Paul Taylor
Paul Wilson Taylor, of Grand Prairie, Texas, 97 years old, went to be with Jesus on July 19, 2011. Son of Mattie and J.L. Taylor (deceased), of Venus, Texas; husband of Hazel Verna Parker Taylor (deceased) of Dallas; brother of James L. Taylor, Jr., Stephen Wayne Taylor, Joe Bob Taylor and Ray Matthew Taylor (all deceased); beloved Father of Paula Taylor King, Jan Taylor Starnes, James Garland Taylor, Ruth Taylor Armstrong and Andrew McLeod Taylor; Grandfather of thirteen wonderful Grandchildren; Great-Grandfather of thirteen extraordinary Great-Grandchildren (and one on the way); World War II Navy Veteran of the Pacific Campaign and a proud SeaBee; faithful servant of God; Paul Taylor lived a long and happy life, surrounded by a loving and appreciative family and many admiring friends. A proud Venus Bulldog varsity athlete, Paul was Valedictorian of the Venus High School class of 1931. Paul worked for more than forty years for Magnolia Petroleum / Mobil Oil Corporation, and left a long legacy of professional courtesy and friendships. After many years of moving around the oil patch, Paul and Hazel landed with their five children in Midland in 1960, where Paul was Employee Relations Manager for Mobil. He earned a Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree from Oklahoma University in 1965. After early retirement in 1973, Mobil hired Paul to train gas plant operators in Indonesia for several years. Many happy years in retirement on Lake Leon near Eastland, Texas, and then several peaceful years near family in the DFW area, Paul is now happily reunited with Hazel in heaven. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 22, at 4:00 p.m. at Midlothian Funeral Home, 200 E. Avenue E, Midlothian, TX 76065, (972) 723-9884. Viewing was at 3:00 p.m. Friday at the same location. The service will be followed immediately by interment at nearby Mountain Peak Cemetery, Hwy 875, Ellis County, the community cemetery on land donated by Paul’s grandfather. Glen Warren
GORMAN- Glen Edward Warren, age 65 of Gorman, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011 at the Eastland Memorial Hospital. Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Barry Schahn officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Gorman. Glen was born June 9, 1946 in Gorman, Texas to John Glendon Warren and Lora Faye Beaty Warren. He was a graduate of Gorman High School. He married Marilyn Robinett on July 22, 1966 in Comanche County. She preceded him in death on May 26, 1992. He later married Judy Morris in Gorman on April 17, 1999. Glen was a farmer and a member of the First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Judy Warren of Gorman; two sons, Justin Warren and wife, Nicole of Saginaw and Jade Warren of Gorman; step-son, Travis Johnston of Stephenville; step-daughter, Susan Riley and husband, Randy of Comanche; mother, Lora Faye Warren of Gorman; sister, Linda Stephens of DeLeon; brother, Mike Warren of Gorman; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Warren. Visitation was from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Margaret King
Margaret Frances King, 83, of Kennedale and formerly of Cisco, passed away July 15, 2011, in Pecan Manor. Services will be Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Cisco, officiated by Reverend John Beckling under the direction of Kimbrough Funeral Home in Cisco. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco. Visitation is Wednesday 10:00~12:00 Noon at the Kimbrough Funeral Home. Margaret was born June 17, 1928, to Clyde E. and Ola (Wisenant) Hailey at Red Springs, Baylor, County, Texas. The family moved to Cisco where Margaret started to school and graduated. She entered North Texas State University where, after four years, she graduated with an Elementary Teacher Certification. Owen King and Margaret were married September 30, 1950, in the First United Methodist Church in Cisco. Owen was a branch manager for Southwestern Life Insurance. He passed away January 25, 2006. She was employed in the El Paso ISD and later the Birdville ISD where she retired in 1983. She loved “making a difference” in the lives of children. Survivors include: son, Ralph King of Winters; daughters, Gay & husband, Robert, of Arlington, Peggy McGaughey of Conroe; sisters, Kay Cockerell & husband, Edward, of Abilene, Wanda Gray & husband, Dan, of Odessa, Billie Tatom of Hill Top Lakes; five grand-children; two great grand-children and “one on the way”. Deloris McDiarmid
EASTLAND – Deloris McDiarmid, 69, of Cisco, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, in Abilene. Graveside services were at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Ranger with Jimmy Maples officiating. Deloris was born on December 25, 1941 in Ranger to Everett Smith and Flossie Pearl Fox. She worked as an aide in home healthcare and was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Ranger. She was preceded in death by one son and one daughter. Survivors include a son, Will and Pepper Barrett of Ranger; a step-son, Jesse Sullivent of Eastland; five daughters, Donna Barrett, Debra Lee-Nelson and Lindsay Sullivent, all of Ranger, Mary Hernandez of Cisco, and Kelly Bezayiff of Stephenville; a step-daughter Patricia Campbell of Arkansas; a nephew, Jimmy Kirk of Grapevine; a niece, Brenda & Jerry Newton of Irving; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
Pamela Larkin
Pamela McKinney Larkin, 57, of Abilene formerly of Cisco, died Tuesday July 12, 2011 at her residence with her family by her side. Graveside services was held 11 a.m. Friday July 15, 2011, at Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco with Minister Bob Ferguson officiating, Visitation will be Thursday July 14, from 10am to 5pm at the Dove Funeral Home 2500 N 1st St. Abilene. Pamela Larkin, born to the parentage of Travis McKinney and Melba Witt in Abilene in 1953 received her education from Cisco public schools. While in Cisco Pamela was a dedicated member of the Nazarene Church until her move to Abilene in 2007. Pamela loved to collect Water falls, and watch Days of our lives everyday. She was preceded in death by her father, Travis McKinney. She leaves to cherish her memory husband, Eddie Larkin of Abilene; mother, Melba Witt of Cisco; three sons, Chris Hollis and Casey Lorance both of Abilene, Todd Larkin of Cisco, and T.J. Larkin of Ranger; a daughter Christie Sylva of Abilene; three brothers Mike McKinney of Weatherford, John McKinney of Grand Prairie and Tim McKinney of Cisco.
William Bonner
EASTLAND - Memorial service for William Austin Bonner were held at the Edwards Funeral Home at 1 p.m, Saturday July 16, 2011. Mr. Bonner died July 12, 2011, in Eastland. He was born July 20, 1925, in Kansas City, Missouri. Lucky in life to have had 2 loves, a 44-year marriage to Nelda Butler, and a 20-year marriage to Peggy Grier Powell. A graduate of Texas Tech, he was a WWII Marine veteran who received the Purple Heart for his wounds received on Sept. 15, 1944 at Peleliu. His memory lives on in his five children and their spouses, as well as his 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Gaylin Bonner and her daughter, Anna; Kirk and Ginny Bonner and their children, Austin, Katie, John and Charlie; Joy and Harold Geiss and their children, Kevin, Adam, Brian, Audrey; Susan Kozak and her children, Aaron, Matt, and Shannon; Scott and his son, Ryan and grandson, Austin.
Gloria O'Neal
Funeral services for Gloria Ann McCafferty O’Neal, 68, of Carlsbad, NM, were held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, in Needville with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Schwartz officiating. Burial was in the IUCC Cemetery, Needville. Mrs. O’Neal died unexpectedly from heart failure on Monday, July 11, 2011. Gloria was born August 24, 1942, in Rosenberg to Robert McCafferty, Sr. and Martha Hackstedt McCafferty. Gloria (aka Chicken, Maki, Mom and Nana) enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and enjoyed being with her friends. She loved George Strait and was an avid Spurs fan. A giving person, she was always a friend when you needed one. Chicken was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Martha Hackstedt McCafferty. Nana will be missed by her two sons, Kenneth “Kenny” O’Neal and wife, Becky, of Helotes, TX, and Jody O’Neal of Huachuca City, AZ. She is also survived by 5 granddaughters: Heather O’Neal of Florence, AZ, Sarah Macri of Clark Mills, NY, Alysha Piperata of Globe, AZ, Abigail O’Neal of Navarre, FL, and Rachel O’Neal of Helotes, TX; 5 great granddaughters, Rylee, Taeler, and Braelynn Jackson, Anna Macri, and Lyne Piperata...and one baby Macri on the way; two brothers, Bobby and Rod McCafferty, both of Needville, TX; and countless friends across the southwest. After starting her family in Carlsbad, NM, Maki lived in Eastland, and Holbrook, AZ. Her final years, she returned to Carlsbad, NM, where she enjoyed her many friends. Maki was loved by all that crossed her path. Pallbearers were Otto “Sonny” Hackstedt, Brian Hackstedt, Glenn Schroeder Sr., Jeff Chapman, John Chapman, and Leighton McCafferty. Her memory will be honored by donating to the American Heart Association, 10060 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX 77054.
Patrick Hay
Patrick Allen Hay, 36, of Cisco died Sunday, July 10, 2011, in Abilene. He was born October 11, 1975, to Aubrey Leroy and Theresa Yvette (Blanchette) Hay in Spokane, WA. Patrick worked as a roustabout in the oil and gas industry. He is survived by his parents, Aubrey and Terrie Hay; brothers, David Hay and Aubrey Hay, Jr.; sister, Sarah Scott; two children and two grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. His extended family, Melissa and Vernon Newsome, Jim and Carol Newsome and others also survive. Patrick was an organ donor and was cremated.
Dale Jones
Memorial services for Dale Jones, 82, of Breckenridge, were held Sunday, July 10, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church. Charles Kuhn officiated. A reception was held immediately following the service in the church undercroft. Arrangements were under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home of Breckenridge. Mr. Jones died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born Nov. 21, 1928, in Woolson, to A.T. Jones and Maude Scott Jones. He married Jerrie Ann Bowen on August 4, 1950, in Ranger. He was a member and deacon at the First Christian Church and member of the Breckenridge Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He worked in oilfield consulting and production. Survivors include a daughter, Leigh Ann Jones Sanders of Breckenridge; son, Larry Jones and wife, Sherry of Anton; sister, Lenda Morris of Fort Worth; brothers, J.D. (Judd) Jones and wife, Reba of Woodson, Henry (Babe_ Jones of Woodson, and Delbert Jones and wife, June of Breckenridge; seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
Walter Ralston
Walter Earle Ralston, 70, of Ranger, died on Friday, July 8, 2011 at his home. Funeral Services were held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, July 11, 2011 at Edwards Funeral Chapel in Ranger with Rev. Cordell Reiner officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements were by Edwards Funeral Home of Ranger. He was born on August 3, 1940, in Fort Worth, Texas to Horace Earle and Gussie Mae Ulrich Ralston. He was a retired insurance appraiser and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife: Martha Slatton Ralston of Ranger; sons and daughers-in-law: Pat and Marsha Ralston of Tennessee and Eric and Sam Ralston of Austin, Texas; daughter: Vicki Ralston and Johnny Ball; step-daughters and husbands: Belinda and Joe Williams and Sheri and James Blackwood of Ranger, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Wesley Stewart
Wesley John Stewart, age 83, of Rising Star, passed away on July 7, 2011 in the Abilene Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 10:00 A.M. graveside at May Cemetery with Terry Jackson officiating. Wesley was born February 24, 1928 in Lawn, Texas to John Wesley and Dollie Lunsford Stewart. He was a Farmer and Rancher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was member of the Church of Christ. He had resided in May for the past 20 years, coming from Hobbs, NM. Wesley is survived by one daughter: JoAnn McDaniel and husband Herbert of Hobbs, NM, one son: David Stewart and wife Mary of Lovington, NM, two sisters: Doris Cerrone of Las Vegas, NV, Gaenell Ehrke of Blanket, two brothers: Lowell Stewart of Early, Geral Stewart of Hobbs, NM, 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Wesley was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Darrel and Bruce Stewart.
Dan Brown
CLYDE- Dan Brown, 84, of Clyde, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at a local hospital. Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Clyde with Rev. Clayton Pennington and Dr. Toby Henson officiating. Burial followed in the Clyde Cemetery directed by Bailey-Howard Funeral Home. Dan was born March 31, 1927 in Eastland to Luther and Mary Jane (Foster) Brown. He attended Eastland High School. He married Charlene Love on May 11, 1947 in Seagraves. Dan was a truck mechanic having worked Koen Salvage in Eastland for 10 years, Ford Motor Company in Ranger, and McAlister Trucking Company in Abilene where he retired after 30 years of service. Dan was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clyde where he served as a deacon since 1986. Survivors are his wife of 64 years, Charlene of Clyde; two sons, Dan Brown, Jr. of Fort Worth and Mark and wife, Brenda Brown of Abilene; one daughter, Sally Morris of Abilene; five grandchildren, Misti and husband, Troy Tom, Bridget and husband, Justin Herring, Chad and wife, Marsha Morris, Sarah and husband, Randy Alexander, Matthew Morris; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lynn Brown of Reno, Nevada and Kenneth Brown of Abilene; two sisters, Judy Wilson of Wichita Falls and Nancy Polston of Abilene. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Brown.
Jim Simmons
EASTLAND- Jim Simmons, age 70 of Eastland, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011 at his home. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday July 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Eastland City Cemetery with Jimmy Lively officiating. Family visitation will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Summers – Bakker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Jim was born on November 4, 1940 in Eastland to the late Frank and Winnie Robinson Simmons. In Apri 1962 he married Carline Srader in Eastland. She preceded him in death in 2004. Jim had worked for many years delivering the Abilene Reporter News in and around Eastland. Jim loved fishing and camping and being in the outdoors. Survivors include: 1 Son, Rodney Simmons of Brady; 1 Sister, Estelle Biggs of Eastland; 2 Grandchildren, Sabrina Rene`e Simmons, and Katrina Marie Simmons; 1 Great Grandson, Roman Hendrix Clary; Numerous Nieces and Nephews. Preceded in death by: Wife; Parent; 1 Sister; 5 Brothers.
Jimmy Vinson
RANGER-Jimmy Ray Vinson, 71, of Ranger, passed away Saturday morning, July 2, 2011 after a very brave battle with lung cancer. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Merriman Baptist Church with burial following at Merriman Cemetery, south of Ranger. Jimmy was baptized in Colony Creek and became a member of Merriman Baptist Church while a young boy. Pallbearers were: Jesse Speer, Patrick Bonney, Lawton Williamson, Eddy Green, Smokey Vinson and Tommy Green. Honorary pallbearers were: Mac Jones, Jerry Don Britt, Bobby Green and Jerry Clark. Jimmy was born December 18, 1939 in Ranger, Texas to Jim and Laverne (Keener) Vinson, who both preceded him in death. Jimmy had a passion for trains all his life. When he was a young boy, his father worked for the railroad and as a result, Jimmy knew most of the train engineers. When they made their runs between Ranger and Strawn, they would “sneak” him onto the train and let him ride down the hill to Strawn and drop him off when they returned to Ranger. As an adult, Jimmy left his profession in the oil and gas industry for a short time just so that he could accept a job driving a train! He is survived by his wife, Sandra of Ranger, two daughters, Nancy Vinson of Ranger and Laney Baker of Abilene; one son, James L. Vinson (Bubba) of Ranger; stepdaughter JoAnne Mitchel and husband Glen of Mineral Wells; stepson Joe Merritt of Mineral Wells; 4 sisters – Merlene Clark and husband Jerry of Midland, TX; Betty Green and husband Bobby of Cisco, TX; Frankie Leggett and husband Jim of Converse, LA; Dolores Britt and husband Jerry Don of Midland, TX and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Katie Rae, Jonny, T.J., Will, James, Rachel and Madison as well as 2 great – grandchildren Kaitlyn and Colton and one on the way - who will be named Jimmy Ray – to be known as J. R. Jimmy was a beloved father and his children had a great respect and love for him. You live in all of us. Every time we hear a train whistle blow, we will remember and think of you always.
